Universal Health Services are accessible to all children and young people. In some cases, there will be similar services available especially for people with Special Education Needs and Disabilities. Click on the button above to find out more.

Mental health includes our emotional, psychological, and social well-being. It affects how we think, feel, and act. It also helps determine how we handle stress, relate to others, and make choices. Mental health is important at every stage of life, from childhood and adolescence through adulthood which is why there are services which can help those dealing with mental health issues. These services require a referral from another agency (e.g. GP). Referrals to children's therapies must come from parents.

Sandwell and West Birmingham Hospital Trust

The Black Country Integrated Care Board (ICB) provides a wide range of integrated community health, mental health, learning disability and social care services to people of all ages.

Community children’s services at Sandwell are integrated with the acute paediatric services at Sandwell Hospital. Services for the health assessment and management of children with a disability in Sandwell are under the guidance of:

  • Community pediatricians who undertake outreach clinics in Tipton, The Lyng Centre in West Bromwich, The Child Development Centre and in special schools. One of the consultants, Dr Rajesh Pandey, undertakes the role of Designated Medical Officer (DMO) for the statutory SEND assessment process for children and young people requiring an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHC Plan) 
  • Children’s therapies - Occupational Therapy, Physiotherapy and Speech and Language Therapy
  • Orthotics services - provide a range of braces and splints to help support, align and protect different parts of the body
  • Community children’s nursing team - outreach work for children in the community as well as providing nursing support in special schools
  • Audiology services (including a clinic set aside for children with special needs)
  • Visual impairment services (based at The Birmingham Midland Eye Centre at City Hospital)
  • Paediatric dietetics - nutritional support for children both in hospital and the community
